Save the Children has been working in Indonesia since 1976 and currently working in 10 provinces across the country. With an annual budget of US$10 million, Save the Children currently manages projects across thematic areas of health & nutrition, education, child protection, child poverty and child rights governance.
Save the Children follows the global vision that every child is entitled to the rights for survival, protection, development, and participation. Save the Children aims to achieve breakthroughs in the way the world treats children and achieve direct and lasting impacts in their lives through application of values such as accountability, integrity, ambition, collaboration, and creativity. The goal is to attain impacts for children through theory of change that include being the voice, the innovator, to achieve results at scale, and build partnership. In its global strategy, Save the Children is determined to respond to and anticipate the threats of Covid-19, conflict, and climate change; and to protect the rights of the children mostly affected by discrimination and injustice now and in the future. In order to support the attainment of the global strategy of Save the Children, key enablers include strategic partnership, utilization of digital data, advocacy, campaign and mobilization, more agile and inclusive organization, and development and optimization of resources.
Save the Children has been working in Indonesia since 1976 and currently operates in 10 provinces in Indonesia with projects across thematic areas such as health and nutrition, education, child protection, child poverty, and child-rights governance. In its 2022-2024 strategy, Save the Children Indonesia has bold ambition for children that include prevention of newborn deaths and stunting, regaining of loss learning for children including children with disability, strengthening government’s child protection system at all levels, ensure inclusive protection of children from all forms of violence, exploitation, neglect, and forced early marriage. Also, building the resilience of children and communities to overcome the negative impacts of climate change and disaster risks through child-sensitive child protection systems, increasing the participation and rights of children and adolescents in the decision making process of the government regarding important issues impacting their lives. Key enablers to achieve this are child-led campaigns, research, evidence and learning, diversified financing and new business model, innovation and technology, integrated programming, transformative partnership, and collaborative and adaptive teams.
To leverage the enablers to accelerate impacts for children, Save the Children’s Sponsorship Program in Sumba is in the process of piloting an innovative initiative that builds on leveraging the agency of the children and local actors in the education sector. The initiative, i2change, which stands for Inclusive Incubator for Young Changemakers, aims to empower children and youth groups aged 15-24 years to practice their skills and influencing power by allowing them to design and lead projects of change that solve issues close to their hearts together with their peers.
The Inclusive Incubator for Young Changemakers (i2change) has been implemented during 2022 with the ultimate aim of developing soft skills (problem solving, critical thinking, creative confidence, and collaboration) of the target beneficiaries of the program. Key activities conducted in order to meet this aim include AMBIS TALK Series, Solve-A-Thon, and Incubation. AMBIS TALK Series is implemented involving local Sumbanese youth to be the speakers for the talk, exchange stories and inspire the youth. This activity contributes to providing a safe space to raise and discuss societal issues impacting children: the importance of soft skills for the Sumbanese young generation and environmental issues and action in Sumba. Participants of the AMBIS TALK Series then took part in the Solve-A-Thon activities that had been conducted twice in May and June 2022. A noteworthy good practice from the implementation of the AMBIS Talk is the collaboration with a local CBO partner, Sumba Cendekia, for knowledge transfer and implementation of AMBIS TALK Series after Solve-a-thon until December 2022.
Through the two Solve-A-Thons, which is a short innovation competition that lasts for four days, children work in groups to identify societal issues of their choice and develop ideas in order to solve the issues through human-centered design learning resources, practical tools, and interactive workshops. The conduct of the Solve-A-Thons resulted in the development of the prototypes that have been refined and implemented during the incubation period from August to November 2022. During the incubation period, the capacity of the children is developed to equip them with the knowledge and practice in the themes of their prototypes consisting of composting, plastic waste handling, youth organization building, and water installations. They also learn and practice rudimentary project management, public speaking and presentation, graphic design and video editing, and advocacy and partnership. The participating children are also provided with support from mentors in refining and implementing their prototypes that have been produced through learning and practice of design thinking.
Through all these incubation activities, the participating children learn and practice design thinking, specific knowledge related to their chosen prototypes, as well as management and communication skills required to present and advocate for their projects. The aim is to develop and increase their soft skills (problem solving, critical thinking, creative confidence, and collaboration). Currently, there are a total 14 groups of children consisting of 46 children who have been implementing 14 projects of change. In November, these 46 children, following the completion of their projects of change, celebrated their achievements and shared their stories of change to their peers and related stakeholders in Festival of Change Week.
Considering the learnings from the first iteration in 2022, i2change is geared up to conduct a second iteration of the innovation initiative in 2023 with specific focus on development and refinement of Sove-A-Thon and Incubation modules and tools. To achieve this goal, we are looking for a Youth and Community Engagement Officer to support in the implementation of module refinement, Solve-a-Thon, and Incubation related activities.
